MANASLU (8,156 m/ 26,758 ft) is the name of the 8th highest mountain in the world, a spectacular snow peak in the Himalayas of Nepal. Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa which means mind or spirit so its name translates roughly to the “Mountain of the Spirit.”
Some of the best treks in Nepal can be had in the Manaslu Region. But very few westerners have discovered its rough beauty and rustic, medieval charm. This is because it is located in the remote north-central district of Gurkha where there are limited transportation options by flight or by road. The area is still pristine and unlike many of the more popular trek routes such as Everest or Annapurna, the cultural impact is very low so no signs boasting a “Yak Donalds” or a myriad internet cafes.
The cultures and peoples encountered in this region are Gurung (of Gurkha army fame) and Tibetan, and smatterings of Tamang, Magar, and Brahmins, Chettris and Newars. The people from this region mainly subsist on small incomes from farming, weaving, a little bit of tourism and from enrolling in the Indian or British Gurkha Armies.
Mountains above 6000 m on view from this region are Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Lantang, Boudha Himal.
SINGLA located at 2400 m is one of the many villages encountered in the Manaslu Region. It has over 200 households, with houses made of stone and wood. A picturesque village, it is located on a hilltop and from here one can see Ganesh Himal and Lantang.
